Link Between Heart Disease and

Periodontal Disease

Studies have shown that people with periodontal disease are TWICE

as  likely to suffer from heart disease.

Much research has been conducted in this area and several theories

exist as to why this link occurs.

The main theory is the bacteria that cause gum disease circulate in the

blood and contribute to atherosclerosis of heart blood vessels.

This can cause blood clots, which restricts the flow of blood to the heart.

This may lead to a heart attack.

As heart disease is so prevalent in this country today our advice to anyone with the mildest gum

problem is to get it under control to minimise your risk of heart disease as much as possible.

This is attainable through regular visits to the hygienist and maintaining the level of hygiene in

between visits.
